Sailing Experience

Yachting:

I have been sailing all my life, mainly around the south coast of England on a family yacht, this enabled me to gain a love and good understanding of sailing. This early experience gave me a good platform to get more serious about it and enabled me to get on a Tall ships race across the North Sea in 2003. This made me realize that this is what I wanted to do for a living so at the start of 2007 I began a 6 month intensive Ocean Graduate yachting course at UKSA to gain my MCA/RYA Yachtmaster Ocean qualification.

January-June This is an intense Yachtmaster trainee course in which I have spent time using various yachts ranging from 26ft Colgate’s to 67ft challenge yachts. I had various roles on the boats, which consisted of skipper, engineer, chef and crew. As skipper I have had a lot of boat handling under power and sail in a diverse range of conditions, I also did lots of navigation and pilotage and became confident with all the instruments on board such as radar, GPS and communication systems. During my training I have attended courses concentrating on maintaining and repairing winches, sails, ropes, rigging, varnish work, GRP, electrics, hydraulics and engines. I now feel that I can competently conduct routine maintenance and repairs in all the areas.

A major part of the training was my ocean phase in which I did three ocean passages in Caribbean waters. During which I really got into the watch system and thoroughly enjoyed the astronavigation navigation, which pushed me to begin with. The in depth planning and preparation I had to do prior to the passages became very rewarding when everything came together and the 2000 miles of passages were complete.

July-August 2003 Crew Prince William, Tall Ship

This was my first offshore passage; we sailed from Anterpen to Aalborg in the annual tall ship race. I quickly discovered how the watch system and sail drills worked on such a large and unusual boat. I learnt a huge amount during this passage from a very experienced Skipper and Mate.

Water sports:

I have grown up doing lots of different water sports starting with dingy sailing when I was 6 in which I immediately enjoyed and have continued since. When I was 10 I stared surfing this is now one of my main passions in life. I am a fully qualified multi activity instructor and take great pleasure in teaching students.

Previous Work Experiences

June – September 2006 Surfing Instructor Animal Surf Academy

I enjoyed my work for the academy and learnt a great deal of soft skills in dealing with customer services and general people skills, which have been very useful as skipper. I also did some managing at the desk which involved tacking bookings and organizing large groups of customers.

July – September 2005 Surfing Instructor Surfs Up Surf School and Harlyn Surf School

When I got my surf instructor qualification I was too young to be employed so I did some work experience at two schools to gain the knowledge of how they worked. I assisted in the instruction of group lessons, providing advice and feedback to students, demonstrating and explaining surf manoeuvres, organizing the distribution of surf equipment and ensuring that health and safety procedures where adhered to.

July – August 2004 Life Guard RNLI

I did my life guard training in June 2004 and then did some work experience during the summer months on the crowded North Cornwall coast helping out at Harlyn bay.
